Funding Request Gets Chilly Reception From Dickinson Co. Supervisors

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A request for funding from Dickinson county 2010 fiscal year budget by Active Okoboji drew a cool response from the board of supervisors at their meeting Tuesday.

The supervisors granted 25-thousand dollars in funding for Active Okoboji a year ago, which was allocated in the current fiscal year’s budget. The organization was requesting a similar amount from the 2010 budget, which has already been finalized and adopted.

While the supervisors took no action on Active Okoboji’s request, they stopped short of a formal denial. Supervisor Mardi Allen told the group it may have been different if the supervisors had received the request while they were still working on the budget. She added there’s no way they can come up with the funding now, as the budget is extremely tight. Allen added the county is also bracing to see what the legislature does in the way of any further cuts in funding.

Active Okoboji was founded a year ago by businessman Tom Bedell. The organization serves as a clearing house for publicizing and organizing various recreational events throughout the Iowa Great Lakes.

The organization’s Director, Jen Johnson, works out of the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce office in Arnolds Park.

There was no immediate word as to what the loss in funding will mean for the organization.
