(Milford)– Officials with local water utilities are advising customers to take some precautions to prevent pipes from freezing.
They say you should partially open a tap if you’ve had a history in the past of pipes freezing. They add you should run a stream about the size of a pencil lead, especially if the water temperature is 34 degrees and your water is running slower than usual.
Another way to help prevent pipes from freezing is to make sure they are insulated. You can also use electrical heat tape, but extreme caution should be used to make sure the tape doesn’t come into contact with anything flammable.
There have been some reports of water pipes freezing and bursting in some seasonal homes where the owners failed to turn off the main water supply valve before leaving. KUOO news is aware of atleast one home on West Lake Okoboji that received extensive damage as a result.
