(Okoboji)-The Lakeside Lab Speaker Series continues tonight. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
The Friends of Lakeside Lab Speaker Series will continue on Tuesday evening with a talk by Dr. Mathew Julius, Head of the Biology Department at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.
Julius is considered one of the top diatom experts in the world and says, he got his start at Iowa Lakeside Lab. “It’s like I’m coming home to Lakeside Lab. I spent probably 17 summers in North Central Iowa in my forming years. So, Diatoms are this wonderful algae that produce 25% of every breath you take and all of the fish oils, even though they don’t get credit for it, because we call them fish oils, that we sort of magnify up. So, they’re these wonderful little cells that are critical in the environment that almost nobody knows anything about. But, the world’s experts came from North Central Iowa and that guy trained almost everybody that’s doing them today in the United States and probably around the world.”
Dr. Julius will speak Tuesday evening at Mahan Hall on the Lakeside Lab Campus, starting at 7 o’clock. The talk is free and open to the public.
