Friends of Lakeside Lab Science Seminar Series to feature talk by Guest Speaker Dr. Jennifer Derr

June 27, 2022 Becky Thoreson

The Lakeside Lab Speaker Series will continue Tuesday evening. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

The Friends of Lakeside Lab Science Seminar Series will feature a guest Speaker Tuesday evening. Dr. Jennifer L. Derr, Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Cruz, says her talk will focus on her research into how health is impacted by environmental change. “I’m an historian of the environment and also an historian of medicine. So, what that means, is that I am interested in the ways that human bodies, all of our bodies, are connected to and influenced by environmental changes, a topic that I think about a lot both historically, but also within the framework of climate change. I’m an historian of the Middle East and North Africa, and on Tuesday, I’m going to be talking about a portion of my research that considers the history of the first dam that was built on The Nile River in Egypt, and how that dam impacted the bodies and the health of populations that lived along The Nile, and specifically through a really dramatic increase in the prevalence of parasitic disease.”

Dr. Derr will speak at 7 o’clock Tuesday evening at Mahan Hall on the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory Campus. The talk is free and open to the public.
