Friends of Lakeside Lab Science Seminar Series to feature talk by Drew Hutchinson July 5

July 04, 2022 Becky Thoreson

(Okoboji)-A talk at Lakeside Lab Tuesday night will include a demonstration of of 3D modeling. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

The Friends of Lakeside Laboratory’s Science Seminar Series will continue on Tuesday evening with a talk by Drew Hutchinson, who is working at Lakeside Lab this summer.

Hutchinson says his talk will focus on an interesting project involving cathedrals in France. “I’m going to talk about this project that we did with Robert Bork and then also, Rebecca Smith, in the Art History Department at the University of Iowa. I went with them to two different places in France, Metz and then also, Reims, and we took our LiDAR, and the goal was to create 3D models of the different cathedrals.”

He adds that the presentation will include a demonstration of 3D modeling. “At the end of the presentation, I plan on doing a full demonstration of photogrammetry, and what that ‘s doing is, basically taking a whole bunch of different pictures of an object, big or small, and then running some software on it to turn it into a 3D model by stitching those images together.”

Drew Hutchinson will speak at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory on Tuesday evening at Mahan Hall starting at 7 o’clock. The talk is free and open to the public.”
