Free Radon Test Kits Available To Dickinson County Homeowners

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson county residents have a special opportunity to test their homes for radon…and can do it for free for a limited time.

The county is making available free radon test kits thanks to a grant.

The kits are being distributed by the county’s Environmental Health office and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. They may be picked up at the Dickinson County Environmental Health Office at the courthouse in Spirit Lake between 8:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday while supplies last.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes out of the soil and gets into homes. It’s the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.

Exposure to radon in homes and work places causes an estimated 200 deaths in Iowa every year…and officials say most of those are preventable, as homes with high levels of radon can be fixed.
