Foul Play Ruled Out In Death Of NW Ia Man

November 22, 2014

(Storm Lake)– A northwest Iowa Sheriff says investigators have ruled out foul play or suicide in the death of a retired Chicago detective found dead in northwest Iowa a day after his daughter was convicted of murder.

Buena Vista County Sheriff Gary Launderville said Monday investigators believe Bernard Richter fell down face first before dying outside his home in Rembrandt.

Richter’s body was discovered November 8th one day after jurors found Tracey Richter guilty of murdering Dustin Wehde in December, 2001. Deputies had been sent to check on Richter after his estranged wife hadn’t heard from him for two days.

Launderville said an autopsy identified the body as Richter’s, but the precise cause of death won’t be released for weeks. He says it’s not clear whether Richter was alive to hear the guilty verdict.
