Former Longtime Spirit Lake Police Chief Passes Away

(Spirit Lake)—A former longtime Spirit Lake Police Chief and well known community member has passed away.

Duane Yager passed away Monday at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake. He was 82.

Yager was hired by the city of Spirit Lake on August 21st, 1966. He was named Captain of the city’s police force on March 11th, 1975 and was appointed Police Chief in 1976, a position he held until his retirement on December 26th, 1997.

Yager was also extremely active in various community organizations and worked in a number of different jobs in the community. He was Secretary of the Salvation Army for some 22 years, was a Master Mason, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, as well as being active in his church.

Yager also served on the Spirit Lake City Council from January 1st, 1998 through December 31st, 2005.

Current Police Chief Jeff Hanson worked as an officer under Yager’s leadership for many years. Hanson told KUOO news he was honored and priviliged to have had that experience…(click here for comment.)
