Food Insecurity Continues To Be Concern In Dickinson County

December 20, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Food pantries throughout Dickinson county continue to see high demands. Supervisor Kim Wermersen is a member of the Dickinson County Hunger Coalition. Wermersen gave an update on the numbers for the past month or so at this week’s Board of Supervisors meeting…

“Lake Park pantry served 76 households…160 people. Milford pantry served 90 households…205 people. Upper Des Moines has been very busy serving around 125 people weekly. Good News Church and Spirit Life pantries are very busy as well. We discussed emergency food boxes that we’ve ordered through Elderbridge that will be used in times of say for example, a blizzard or something, they can have those in storage for a meal.”

On a positive note, Wermersen says they’re seeing an increase in involvement in the Hunger Coalition from outside sources in an effort to further address food insecurity in Dickinson county.
