Food Drive underway for Upper Des Moines Opportunity

November 10, 2022 Becky Thoreson

(Spirit Lake)-A food drive is underway to help stock the Pantry at Upper Des Moines Opportunity in Spirit Lake. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

Local businesses are joining forces to help those in need with a food drive for Upper Des Moines Opportunity.
Outreach Specialist Jason Peterson says there is an increased need at this time of year. “Some of our programs going on right now, our Energy Assistance, we have an Adopt a Family Program for Christmas, Coats for Kids Program and of course, the food pantry that we do every Wednesday from 10 to 3:30 in our local office here in Dickinson County. We’ve seen an increase, especially in the last few weeks, of people needing our assistance. If you can donate food, that’s great. We receive a lot of canned good and things like that but we always run short on things like shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper. So, it’s a broad range of things that we need and we appreciate all the support.”
He notes that there are several Upper Des Moines offices in the region. “Upper Des Moines also has offices in all of the county seats in Northwest and North Central Iowa, including Sibley, Estherville, Emmetsburg and Spencer. So, if you are listening to this and not able to get to Spirit Lake, maybe you can get to Sibley or Estherville or one of our other offices to be able to donate.”
Non-perishable items may be dropped off at Upper Des Moines Opportunity as well as at several other Spirit Lake businesses this month. Donations will also be accepted at the WOW Vendor Show this weekend.
