Flooding Ends Season At A NW Iowa Track; Forces Changes For Lyon County Fair

July 05, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Rock Rapids)– Extensive flooding is forcing an early end to the racing season at a northwest Iowa track and is resulting in some big changes for the 2024 Lyon County Fair.

Officials at Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids say the remainder of the 2024 season there has been suspended. Large portions of the track remained underwater at last report, and a fence at the facility was destroyed.

Floodwaters have also caused considerable damage to buildings and infrastructure at the nearby fairgrounds. As a result, officials say the 2024 Lyon County Fair will have a similar look to it as in 2020 when covid forced some big changes. Livestock exhibitors will have opportunities to show and go, and static exhibitors will have an opportunity to exhibit as well. The livestock events will be held at the Osceola County Fairgrounds in Sibley.

The Lyon County Fair picnic is still supposed to happen, but it will be at the Forster Community Center in Rock Rapids, and will be a fundraiser to help rebuild the fairgrounds.
