Flood Concerns Result In Cancellation Of Local Storm Spotter Class

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Growing concern over the potential of widespread, major flooding this spring has resulted in the National Weather Service calling off some of its storm spotter classes in the region.

The class originally scheduled for April 5th in Spirit Lake is among those being scrapped.

Officials with the National Weather Service in Sioux, which puts on the classes, says the instructor, Todd Heitkamp, would be called to Pierre in the event of flooding in that state to serve as the National Weather Service Liaison for South Dakota.

In addition, they say the rest of the staff at the Soux Falls office would be very busy with not only daily activities, but flood forecasts and related issues.

As a result, they plan to offer spotter classes on a more regional basis, but they say even that could change.

As of right now, classes are still scheduled for April 8th in Estherville and April 12th or 13th in Sheldon.
