(Alton)– Firefighters from multiple departments endured subzero weather while battling a house fire Monday evening in Alton, in Sioux county. Firefighters were called to 207 10th Street just before 5:30 pm and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the home. Two occupants managed to get out unharmed. They were checked over on the scene by paramedics and were released. A pet died of smoke inhalation.

Fire departments from Alton, Orange City and Sioux Center battled the blaze and kept it from spreading to some nearby structures. Authorities say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
