Fire Prevention Month Tip: Now Is The Time To Have Your Furnace Checked Over

October 04, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– With next week being fire prevention week and with much colder temperatures in the forecast comes another important reminder: make sure your furnace is ready to go for the upcoming season. Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly says it’s always a good idea to do that now rather than risk having a problem later in the heating season…

“Just make sure you’ve got new, good filters in your furnace. Check your CO detector. Make sure the batteries are good. There again there’s always a date on the back. Make sure it’s not 10-years-old. We do go out to a few of them and we take our meter through the house and there’s nothing there. We’ll look at the detector and find out it’s 10-years-old, so usually we can just blame it on the detector, but we always, always take the meter through and make sure they’ve got fresh air in there.”

Daly adds it’s a good idea to have a professional look over your heating equipment.

And another reminder to use extreme caution if you’re going to be using a space heater, as they can be especially dangerous.
