Fire Prevention Month: An Excellent Time To Test Smoke Detectors

October 05, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– As we’ve mentioned previously, we’re in the midst of Fire Prevention Month, and next week is Fire Prevention Week. Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly says it’s a perfect time to test your smoke detectors and fire alarms…

“You know, every time we go to a fire we always check for smoke detectors, make sure they’re working. You’d be surprised how many times we find that they aren’t working. So, you know, you need to check the smoke detectors, make sure they’ve got good batteries in them. We teach the kids, you know, change the batteries when we change the clocks, that’s just a good way to remember. If your smoke detector is over 10 years, you need to get rid of it and get new ones, and that kind of goes with your CO detectors, too.”

Daly adds we need to be mindful as to the number of smoke detectors in our homes and where they are located…

“There should be one in every bedroom and one in the hallway to every bedroom, and also one on each floor. It sounds like a lot of smoke detectors, but. The newer houses are all designed, and they have to, be hard wired and connected so if one rings, they all ring.”

When it comes to the age of your smoke detector, Daly most have the date as to when they were manufactured on the bottom of them.
