Final Public Informational Meeting Held On H-LP Bond Referendum

October 31, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Lake Park)– The final public informational meeting on an upcoming bond referendum for the Harris-Lake Park School District was held last (Mon.) evening in Lake Park. Superintendent Gary Richardson reminds us what the project would consist of if voters approve the $18.6 million measure one week from today (Tues.)…

“Our project is pre K through 5, an addition to the current Middle School High School which would then move us from the current elementary building which is a pre K through 5 as well. The proposed project is about $18.6 million and would include in the project again the pre K through 5 building, a gym, and move our food service and administrative offices into that area as well. The spaces will also be, since they’re connected, there will be three or four classrooms that can be shared with the other building giving us plenty of room for expansion. Part of the project is a practice facility with a four to six lane track as well, and then a bus barn, a transportation facility, if there are funds available would also be added. So in essence we would be a master campus school and that’s the beauty of this, is that even with new construction we’ll have 60,000 square feet less to heat and cool with this project.”

Richardson explains how it would affect taxpayers in the H-LP District…

“Which is approximately about 15 dollars a month per household for a house that’s valued at $100,000, and it’s about $5.45 per acre for an average acre of ground in Dickinson and Osceola county.”

Other school districts putting bond issues to the voters on Election Day include Sheldon School District, where voters will decide on a $19.16 million bond issue, Rock Valley Community School District where voters will be asked to approve a $25 million bond issue, West Sioux School District, where they’re asking voters to approve a $15.5 million bond issue, and West Lyon, where a $19.8 million bond issue is on the ballot.
