November 22, 2014

(Emmetsburg)– A fiery crash early Saturday on Highway 18 in Palo Alto county sent four people to the hospital.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says 22-year-old Nicklause Sewell of West Bend was driving a 2003 Ford Ranger northbound and 32-year-old Lisa Moorman of Cedar Rapids was driving a 2003 Nissan eastbound. Authorities say Sewell failed to stop at a stop sign and broadsided the vehicle driven by Moorman. Both vehicles wound up in a yard at 3697 510th Avenue. The Sewell vehicle immediately started on fire and became fully engulfed. The Moorman vehicle rolled onto its roof trapping one of the two passengers in it.

Moorman was able to crawl out of her vehicle and called 911. Sewell was able to crawl out of a window of his vehicle. He was then pulled away from the burning truck by a passerby.

Both Sewell and Moorman along with two passengers in Moorman’s vehicle were taken to the Palo Alto County Hospital with incapacitating injuries.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Emmetsburg Fire Department, the Palo Alto County Ambulance, Emmetsburg Police Department, the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, Whittemore ambulance and the Iowa State Patrol.

Authorities say charges are pending in the crash which took place around 12:20 a.m. Saturday.
