(Orleans)– Our ongoing series highlighting various lakes area communities focuses this week on Orleans.
KUOO’s John Adams, Sr. recently visited with Mayor Bill Maahs…(click here for actuality.) What city project has Orleans probably been the proudest of that you’ve done? “Well I think one of the things that we’ve been very proud of is my predecessor was Carlton Mitchell and he was instrumental in getting a drainage utility district started which was one of the first in the state. So that’s one of the things. Of course there’s other things that come to mind. You know we have a joint project on Peoria Avenue by the fairgrounds, north of the fairgrounds, with Spirit Lake and Dickinson county. We’ve replaced all of our street signs. You know for a small town we get things done.”
Looking ahead then for 2013 or ’14 are there any special works coming up for your city? “Well one of the biggest things we’re working on right now, of course we’re trying to finish up we’re trying to do the pump house beautification at the north end of Hill Avenue, a joint project with the city of Spirit Lake. But the big thing that comes to mind is Pioneer Beach Road. That’s the road between Pioneer Beach Resort and the Spirit Lake Fish Hatchery. This would be a joint project with Spirit Lake, the Dickinson County Trails Association, because we want to put a nice trail up through there, a recreational trail, for people to be able to walk on and walk safely, or ride their bicycles or you know general recreation. And like you say that’s a joint project and that’s something that’s in the works right now. We try to work with all the other government entities and try to get things done.”
