(Spencer)– Family Fest is coming up this Saturday at the Clay County Regional Events Center in Spencer…
“We have exhibitors, all kind of family friendly related, have a product or service related to that. Most of them do some fun games and activities and giveaways at their booths as well, so that’s something to definitely check out. Safety City is one of the areas that’s very popular, back by popular demand. That is basically local law enforcement, EMT’s, fire department, there’s an ambulance, and all the different branches of law enforcement will be there, which is amazing. You can come in, you can check out their vehicles, you can put on a kevlar vest, you can hop in the ambulance and check that out and talk to all these individuals. The goal of that is that hopefully if you should ever have to interact with any of those public safety individuals, it’s a little bit less scary when the time comes because you’ve got a chance to meet them in this fun setting and then get to learn a little bit.”
Admission is free…
“We’ll have door prizes. And so as you come in you’ll get a little goody bag with all your freebies that Alicia mentioned. You’ll also sign up for a door prize that we call throughout. So on the little sign up, we actually just get a zip code so we have an idea where people are from. We see people from, gosh, I don’t know, probably about 100 miles away from Spencer, so it really is regional. So we see tons of kids, tons of families, some of them local, lots of them not, as well, which is great.”
Everyone is invited…
“There are lots of educational opportunities, there are a lot of vendors, there are a lot of businesses, there are a lot of people that volunteer their time to make this event happen. There are a lot of sponsors that give to make it free. It’s a really, really special opportunity to see Spencer come together for an event like this. So if you’ve never come, we’d really like to see some new people, too.”
Some free books will also be distributed to the kids…
“I help with the Spencer Reads Program as well and we partner with the public library to have a booth out there where you can stop in and get a free book. We did a book drive over the last couple of weeks and we have tons, like hundreds of books, so we want everybody to stop and pick a new book to go home, so I’m pretty excited about that.”
Some STEM activities from Iowa Lakes Community College will also be featured, along with activities from ISU Extension and Outreach, Clay County.
Family Fest will be held this Saturday, March 2nd, from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Clay County Regional Events Center.
