(Okoboji)-Animal experts are urging Pet Owners to take extra care with Pets during the holiday weekend. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
With the extended holiday weekend, Pet Experts are urging owners to take precautions during the fireworks.
Hailey Dirks, Shelter Director with The Humane Society of Northwest Iowa says, it’s important to have identification on your pet. “Keep their collars on them, just in case. Some dogs will get so scared they’ll bust through a window. When they’re scared they get the fight or flight response. Otherwise, if you don’t have a collar tag, get some painter’s tape and tape it to the collar and put your phone number on it. It’s super simple, super cheap and it does help your dog get back home sooner. If you have the means and the time, get your dog a microchip. That is the single, most effective way to keep track of your dog.”
She notes that it’s also important to take steps to help make your pet feel safe. “There are a few different things that you can do in the home. You can turn on the TV, turn on the radio, get them distracted. Make sure they have a safe haven each evening before the fireworks start. We also recommend, close your windows, close your blinds, close your shades, anything you can do to muffle the sound. They don’t understand what is actually going on, so the big boom is pretty scary.”
