Experts Offer Advice On How To Keep Utility Bills In Check This Winter

December 22, 2025

(Undated)– It is the time of year where we start to see our energy costs rise. Marissa Gaal who is the Public Affairs Program Manager at Black Hills Energy says there are a number of ways to help with high energy costs during the winter…

“One of the easiest is looking at our thermostat and setting it as low as is comfortable. On cold days, a programmable thermostat is something that you can kind of change from your phone or an app is also really helpful. We also really suggest running complete loads of laundry and complete loads of dishes in your dishwasher so that you’re not running it more often and using more energy while getting less out of it. You can also skip the drying cycle on your dishwasher completely, and let those dishes air dry by propping that door open. And those are just a couple of ways that we encourage people to kind of look at their usual habits.”

There are resources available to help combat your rising energy costs during the winter months. Gaal says one of the most important is a free in-home energy assessment of your home…

“This helps our customers better understand ways that they can become more energy efficient. So this gives you expert advice, free energy efficiency upgrades, and up to $50 in rebates and they can find out more about that online at our website.”

You can find out more about the energy assessment and other resources available through Black Hills Energy at blackhillsenergy.com or with your local energy provider.
