Expert Says All Of That Rain Over The Christmas Holiday Was Extremely Beneficial

December 27, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– All of that rain that fell over the Christmas holiday will go a long way toward easing the drought. Tim Hall is with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources…

“Really a great event to help us keep chipping away at the deficits that we’ve got for the drought.”

Hall says even then, 2023 is going to go down as a very dry year…

“We’re still going to end the year probably between six and seven inches short of rain for the state, on average.”

Hall adds the late December rain came at a crucial time…

“Going into a normally dry month like January off of a nice rain storm over the Christmas weekend is a great thing.”

He adds the fact that there’s no frost in the ground was a huge win, as that allowed the moisture to soak into the soil, instead of running off.

A little more than an inch and-a-half of rain fell on the Iowa Great Lakes Christmas Eve and Christmas day.
