Estherville Police Stepping Up Enforcement Of “Jake Brake” Ordinance

November 03, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– Police in Estherville say they’re increasing enforcement of the city’s engine brake, or “jake brake” ordinance.

Police Chief Brent Shatto says jake braking is only allowed for trucks that have mufflers. Otherwise, he says it’s against the city ordinance unless they’re being used in the event of an emergency.

Shatto says they’ve been getting increased complaints about the loud noise in recent days, since Highway 4 reopened on the city’s south side and Highway 9 opened back up on the west side. He says they’ve even had complaints from downtown businesses about the noise.

Shatto says the fine for using a jake brake without a muffler ranges from $1 to $100 plus costs.
