(Estherville)– An Estherville man is being recognized for his heroic actions during a fire Sunday evening. Estherville Fire Chief Travis Sheridan says Brice Sifert was driving along North 5th Street in Estherville a little before midnight when he noticed flames shooting up the exterior wall of a garage. Sheridan says Sifert stopped, ran to the front door of the residence and started knocking. The homeowner came to the door and was safely evacuated. Slifert then called 911.
He then ran to the backyard of a neighboring property, grabbed a garden hose and started fighting the fire. The homeowner joined him moments later with his own garden hose. The two battled the fire until the Estherville Fire Department arrived. They ensured there was no extension of the fire into the interior walls. Sheridan says thanks to the quick action of Sifert and the homeowner, only minor damage was reported to the exterior of the garage, and no injuries were reported.
Sheridan says it’s believed a log pile stacked against the garage was ignited after the property owner had been burning weeds earlier in the day.
The Estherville Police Department, Emmet County Sheriff’s Office and Emmet County Dispatch assisted.
