(Wallingford)– An Estherville man escaped injury Thursday when a vehicle he was driving collided with a train at a crossing in Wallingford.
The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office says Taran Washington of Estherville was eastbound when he attempted to stop for a Union Pacific train. Washington told authorities the brakes failed on the 1993 Cadillac he was driving and that he jumped from the vehicle when it became obvious a collision was imminent. The Cadillac continued eastbound and collided with the last rail car of the train.
No injuries were reported to Washington; minor damage was reported to the rail car. Severe damage was reported to the Cadillac.
Washington was cited for failure to stop at a railroad crossing.
The incident took place around 5:00 p.m. Thursday.
