(Estherville)– The Estherville Fire Department is putting out a reminder following a call they responded to earlier this week. Fire Chief Travis Sheridan says they responded to a significant natural gas leak in a home in which the levels reached explosive thresholds. He says firefighters acted quickly to safely address the matter.
Sheridan says it’s important to know the distinctive rotten egg odor of natural gas, and to immediately call 911 if you smell it. He also encourages homeowners to make sure furnaces, water heaters and stoves are in good working order and to have them serviced annually by qualified professionals.
Also, they remind everyone to make sure your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working properly and have fresh batteries in them. It’s also important to regularly check vents and chimneys to make sure they are clear of snow, ice and debris.
