(Estherville)– An upcoming vacancy on the Estherville City Council will not be filled by appointment.
Dave Seylar is resigning from his Ward 3 seat effective August 8th as he’s moving to a different part of the city. Seylar’s term expires at the end of this year.
City Administrator Penny Clayton told council members Monday evening ordinarily they would have two options, but one of them, holding a special election, is out of consideration due to timing…
“In this case because the regular election is less than 90 days from the date of the vacancy, you wouldn’t have a special election, it would just happen with the regular election if you choose that route. If you don’t choose that route, you’d rather do an appointment, then that has to be done within 60 days of the vacancy.”
The council voted unanimously to not make an appointment, saying that person would only serve for a very limited time. Whoever wins in the November election will serve a full term.
Seylar is stepping down after serving some 18 years on the Estherville City Council.
Anyone interested in running for the ward 3 seat is encouraged to take out papers once the filing period opens for the November election.
