Estherville City Council Stops Short Of Formal Approval Of Electric Rate Increase

February 03, 2026

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday evening approved the first reading of a revised ordinance increasing electric rates in the city, opting to bring the matter back for additional readings prior to any final adoption. The council opted for the additional considerations siting the magnitude of the proposed 15 percent rate increase. City Administrator Penny Clayton told the council it stems largely from increased costs being passed on to the city by its power suppliers…

If granted final approval, Clayton says the increase will show up on bills going out at the end of March that are due April 20th.

As we reported previously, if approved, it would be the first adjustment in electric rates in Estherville since 2017. Even with the increase, Clayton says Estherville’s rates would still be less than those charged by surrounding utility providers.
