Estherville City Council Reviews New Automated Garbage Collection System

January 21, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday reviewed how things are going with the city’s new automated trash collection system that was just recently implemented. City Administrator Penny Clayton says for the most part it’s been going good…

“Overall I’d say our bumps are pretty minimal. We did a lot of research prior to implementing this, had a lot of the questions answered ahead of time. But there are a couple of comments from public and from staff that I think it’s important maybe for us to discuss and figure out maybe how we want to proceed, because if we’re going to make a change, some of this will need to be changed via ordinance so we’ll need to bring an ordinance back.”

One councilman expressed concern over a charge for an additional level of service for the disabled in which city crews take the containers from the door of the residence to the truck then back to the door…

“It seems like we’re punishing those who are disabled or don’t have the ability to bring their trash out to the corner.”

22 citizens currently pay for the additional level of service. Clayton says one option would be for those customers to get a smaller 35 gallon container, instead of the current 95 gallon, which she says could still fall under the enhanced service at the same cost as those who are on the basic service. No action was taken on the matter. Council members indicated they want to see the smaller containers first and visit further with constituents.
