Estherville City Council Intends To Fill Mayoral Vacancy By Appointment

August 20, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday evening unanimously approved a motion expressing their intention to appoint someone to fill the remainder of the Mayor’s term. Mayor Adam Edwards resignation became effective at the end of the day Monday. Edwards is moving outside of city limits.

A notice will be published to seek applications from anyone who may be interested in filling the remainder of Edwards’ term, which expires at the end of 2025. City Administrator Penny Clayton says at least one person, former Mayor Kenny Billings, has expressed interest.

The matter will be back on the agenda for the council’s next regular meeting September 3rd.

The council could have opted for a special election, however City Administrator Penny Clayton says that would come with a roughly $7,000 price tag.

Citizens opposed to the council’s decision to appoint someone to the vacancy can petition for a special election.
