(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council once again stopped short at their meeting Tuesday evening of officially removing some stoplights at the intersection of 2nd Avenue North and North 6th Street, replacing them with stop signs for traffic on 2nd Avenue. The council held a second reading on proposed ordinance amendments to do that, but opted to hold off on a third reading and final adoption until their next meeting November 3rd . Council members said they want to make sure residents have plenty of opportunity to air any concerns they may have with the proposal.
A recent study into the city’s stoplights indicated the ones at that intersection are no longer warranted. City Administrator Penny Clayton says the council could later consider making the intersection a four-way stop should it become warranted.
Meanwhile, Clayton says there’s an issue with a set of stoplights at another nearby intersection…
“So Central and 7th is still on flash until we’re able to get a tech here to try to figure out what the problem is. We’ve done all of the, we’ve taken all of the steps we can take to try to fix it, now we need to wait for the tech.”
Clayton says most of the controllers for the signals are of 1980’s vintage and have become obsolete.
