Estherville City Council Approves Tax Exemptions

January 04, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday evening approved several commercial and residential property tax exemptions. City Administrator Penny Clayton…

“Our current residential abatement schedule is 100 percent on the new value, just the new value, for a period of five years and then it goes into a sliding scale. And then for commercial or industrial properties they have the choice between three years at 100 percent or a phase-in period over 10 years as well, so they do get an option. We have one in the commercial zone and then we have 10 in the residential phase. One thing to note is that these don’t become final until they’ve been reviewed by the County Assessor to make sure that they meet the minimum qualifications which means for improvements they have to improve the value of their property by more than 10 percent to qualify. If they don’t meet that threshold then they will not get put into place.”

The city adopted the exemptions as an incentive for property owners to make improvements.
