Estherville City Council Approves Jr. Firefighter Program

September 07, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday evening approved a junior firefighter program for the city’s Fire Department. Fire Chief Travis Sheridan told the council primary goal is to foster interest in volunteering and firefighting among high school students in the hope that once they become adults, it will spark interest in them becoming a full time firefighter. Sheridan says they’ve been working closely with the school Superintendent. He adds students would have to apply for the program and would be carefully vetted. Sheridan says those selected would serve the department strictly in a support capacity…

“And hoping by the time they turn 18 or they head into 12th grade or graduate that we can move them into as full time members on the Fire Department.”

City Administrator Penny Clayton told the council the program will have no impact on the city’s insurance…

“They’re not going to be doing the dangerous type of activities. There will be a structured environment learning. It’s not likely they’ll be injured doing that.”

The vote to approve the program was unanimous.
