Estherville City Council Approves Citywide Clean Up Days

March 23, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday voted to have city-wide clean-up days April 25th-29th. It makes it the second consecutive year for the city to hold the event. There was again discussion as to whether or not to make it an annual affair, or to hold it every other year. City Administrator Penny Clayton says while it improves the aesthetics of the city, it does come with a price tag…

“It is expensive. It cost us $32,000 last year to do that. That’s the net cost. We had some revenue from the sale of stickers and the sale of metal we collect and that sort of thing.”

Councilman Brandon Carlin said he does have a concern about holding it annually…

“My only concern if we do it on an annual basis is that it will lose novelty, if you will, and you’ll have less people that will, they won’t clean out, necessarily, because, well, I’ll just catch next year.”

For now the council will decide each year during budget time as to whether or not to hold clean-up days that particular year. Clayton says the cost is covered through revenue generated in the solid waste fund.
