Erratic Driving Complaint Results In OWI, Drug Charges

November 22, 2014

(Sanborn)– A report of an erratic driver has resulted in the arrest of a South Dakota man on drug and drunk driving charges.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office says it stems from a report deputies received regarding a vehicle being driven all over the road around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 18 east of Sanborn.

Authorities located the suspect vehicle and upon investigating, the driver, 44-year-old Richard Smith of Canton, South Dakota, was arrested on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and operating while intoxicated…first offense. Smith was also determined to be under the influence of a narcotic drug.

He was booked into the O’Brien county jail and was released the following day after posting a $1,000 bond. He is to appear in court at a later date.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office and the Sanborn Police Department.
