Endowment Committee Holds First Meeting

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A committee governing the Mini-Wakan Shelter and Gull Point Endowment Fund has been established and recently held its first meeting.

Rob Oldson was elected President, Paula Henry, Secretary and Dave Murphy, Treasurer. Other members of the committee include Steve Rose, Bill Sackett and Joe Ulman.

In addition to raising funds to restore the shelter at Mini-Wakan State Park, the Endowment Fund is an important second goal of the Mini Wakan committee. Approximately a million dollars has been raised through grants of $100,000 from the Okoboji Foundation, $100,000 from the Iowa Historical Society, $500,000 from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and $300,000 in local contributions.

Of the total amount raised, about $250,000 will be deposited in the Mini Wakan Shelter and Gull Point Lodge Endowment Fund, which will operate as an affiliate of the Okoboji Foundation to facilitate donations. Contributions to the fund may be mailed to the Spirit Lake Protective Association, Mini-Wakan Shelter, P.O. Box 51, Spirit Lake…51360.

The endowment will provide necessary funds for repairs or replacements for the shelters at Mini Wakan and Gull Point, assuring their upkeep in the future.

Renovation of the Mini Wakan shelter got underway last month and is scheduled for completion by June, 2012.
