Emmet County Traffic Stop Results In Drug Charges

November 22, 2014

(Estherville)– A traffic stop last week on Highway four south of Estherville resulted in the arrest of a Kossuth county man on drug charges.

Emmet County Sheriff Mike Martens tells KUOO news a deputy pulled over a vehicle after observing the occupants weren’t wearing seatbelts and that the driver had failed to stop for a stop sign.

Upon investigating deputies discovered what’s alleged to be marijuana along with other violations.

The driver, 24-year-old Cory Cheever of Fenton, was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance, failure to stop at a stop sign, operation of an unregistered vehicle, no insurance, fraudulent use of registration and failure to use seatbelts. Cheever was booked into the Emmet county jail and was released on bond the next day.

A passenger in the vehicle, 20-year-old Chris Cheever of Ringsted, was cited for failure to use a seatbelt and was released.

Martens says Cory Cheever had previously been released from custody back in October of this year as a result of charges filed after a search warrant was executed on his residence. It resulted in authorities finding what was alleged to be marijuana. Cheever was then taken into custody by Emmet and Kossuth county deputies on an outstanding arrest warrant out of Emmet county for possession of a controlled substance.

Martens says in that case, Cheever was booked into the Emmet county jail and was released the next day on his recognizance following an appearance before a magistrate.
