DPS: Permitting Process Allowing School Staff To Carry Guns Still Being Developed

August 12, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– Schools in Iowa start classes in about two weeks, but the Iowa Department of Public Safety says none have been issued permits for staff to carry guns on school property.

The law went into effect in April but rules establishing training requirements for school employees to obtain a permit haven’t been approved yet. A public comment period on the proposed rules closes tomorrow (Tues.).

Meanwhile, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the few districts that are considering arming staff have been told by their insurance company that their policies won’t be renewed if they proceed with the plan.
