DNR To Stock Trout In Northwest Iowa Pond

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Not many people associate trout fishing with northwest Iowa. That may be about to change, though.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources plans to stock 1,400 trout in Scharnberg Pond near Spencer this coming Saturday, December 18th. Officials say the half-pound rainbow trout will from the Decorah trout hatchery will arrive between noon and 1:00 p.m. that day. In the event of poor weather or weak ice the stocking will be held December 29th.

Mike Hawkins, Fisheries Management Biologist for the DNR at Spirit Lake, says there will likely be an ice fishing clinic and other activities organized by the Clay County Conservation Board in conjunction with the stocking event.

The DNR has plans for a second trout stocking in the 15-acre pond in January.

Anglers who want to fish for trout need to purchase a trout stamp in addition to an Iowa fishing license. The daily bag limit for trout is five; the possession limit is 10.
