DNR Relaxes Fishing Regs On Palo Alto County Lake

November 22, 2014

(Des Moines)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is relaxing fishing regulations on a Palo Alto county lake that’s being restored.

The agency says until further notice, anglers with a valid fishing license can take fish by any means from Virgin Lake except dynamite, poison, electroshocking devices or stupefying substances. Daily bag and minimum length restrictions have also been lifted on the lake. Taking fish for commercial purposes is NOT allowed.

The DNR is drawing down the 220-acre lake in hopes of stimulating plant growth, to eliminate common carp, and to compact bottom sediments.

After the drawdown, DNR officials say the lake will be stocked with sport fish. They say the overall goal of the project is to provide healthier fish and wildlife habitat, along with clean water.
