(Spencer)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are hoping a draw-down of water levels on one area lake will help improve its water quality.
Bryan Hellyer, a Wildlife Biologist with the Iowa DNR, says a partial water drawdown is underway on Trumbull Lake in Clay county as an experiment. Hellyer says the lake’s fishery has been sporadic and is dominated by common carp and that waterfowl use has also diminished on the lake.
Hellyer says a similar draw down a few years ago on West Swan Lake resulted in the re-establishment of some aquatic plants and improvements in water quality, fish and wildlife habitat.
Hellyer says the draw down of Trubull Lake is temporary and that it will not be complete drawdown. He says officials do not intend to affect the fishery and that they plan to gradually refill the lake by this fall.
