DNR Issues Reminders To Snowmobilers

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– Enforcement officers with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources remind snowmobile operators to be aware of where they’re operating their sleds.

Conservation officer Jeff Morrison says rough trails in ditches have resulted in some operating their snowmobiles in places where they don’t belong.

Morrison says road ditches are where snowmobiles should be driven–if you’re not on the lake. He says you must have permission from the property owner before operating on private property. And Morrison says it’s illegal to operate a snowmobile in state wildlife areas.

Morrison adds snowmobilers need to use extra caution after dark and operate at slower speeds. He says many have a tendency to override their headlight, or driving faster than the range of their headlight. Morrison says that can result in a collision…especially on the lake where ice heaves can be present.
