DNR Investigating Fish Kill On East & West Lakes Okoboji & Lower Chain Of Lakes

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are looking into a fish kill that’s taken place in recent days on East and West Lakes Okoboji and the lower chain of lakes.

Mike Hawkins, a fisheries biologist with the DNR, tells KUOO news they’ve been getting numerous reports of dead fish in recent days, involving mainly yellow and white bass and some large mouth bass. He says it may be related to a disease or virus, but he says an investigation into something more definitive is underway.

Hawkins says specimens will be sent early next week to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service disease lab in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
