DNR Investigating Fish Kill On Center Lake

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is looking into a fish kill on Center Lake.

Mike Hawkins, a DNR Fisheries Biologist, tells KUOO news the fish kill so far has involved mainly common carp. He says he started noticing it a week or so ago…(Click here to hear comment from Hawkins…).

There was a report at Tuesday’s Spirit Lake city council meeting of wastewater backing up out of a manhole on 23rd Street near Lakes Regional Healthcare for a brief period one day last week, but Hawkins says it isn’t known if that could have been a factor in the fish kill. The storm sewer from which the spill occurred empties into Center Lake. A woman who lives in the Center Lake area told the council she saw a plume of discolored water flowing into the lake one day last week. City officials weren’t immediately sure if that could have been related to the sewer issue, saying they were looking into it.
