DNR Grants Flood Plain Approval For Lower Gar Bridge With A Stipulation

August 20, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors this (Tues.) morning cut through some red tape that needed to be cleared in order for the bridge project at the Lower Gar Outlet to proceed. County Engineer Cole Budach says the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has approved a flood plain permit for the project, with the stipulation the county directs FEMA to complete what’s known as a “letter of map change” and a “conditional letter of map revisions”…

“This application comes with a $6,500 flat fee and what we’re doing is we’re asking FEMA to review our project to see if after it’s constructed they would accept the changes and make revisions to the flood insurance study downstream on Mill Creek.”

Budach says information from the updated hydrological study by the University of Iowa that we’ve reported on previously will also be included with the documentation.

There was no immediate word as to how long that could take.
