(Orleans)– Anglers are getting ready for ice fishing season as lakes and ponds across the northern two-thirds of Iowa are starting to freeze.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources advises at least four inches of clear ice for fishing and about five inches for ATVs and snowmobiles.
The DNR also warns to watch out for blankets of snow over parts of the lakes as it indicates potential hazards or weak spots.
The chief of fisheries for the Iowa DNR says ice conditions change all the time and its thickness can vary across the lake.
