DNR Bringing In Additional Enforcement Officers For Winter Games Weekend

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– Expect to see an increased presence in DNR officers in the Iowa Great Lakes for Winter Games Weekend.

Gary Owen, a DNR Enforcement officer, tells KUOO news 10 additional officers are being brought in from outside the area. He says they’ll be operating on snowmobiles. Owen says they’ll be keeping a close eye out for intoxicated snowmobile and ATV operators and for expired registrations.

The additional officers are part of a snowmobile and ATV task force formed by the DNR that travels around the state.

Jeff Morrison, also a DNR Enforcement Officer, reminds everyone that operating a snowmobile or ATV while intoxicated carries the same penalty as operating any other motor vehicle while under the influence.

Those planning to be out on the ice are also being warned of some seams and ice heaves. Morrison says most of them are located off points. He says a particularly bad ice heave is located on West Lake Okoboji between Fort Dodge and Pillsbury Point. That heave is said to be atleast six feet high in places.
