(Paullina)– An invasive aquatic plant has turned up in a northwest Iowa plake and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is trying to figure out how it got there.
Erasian Water Milfoil has been found on Mill Creek Lake in Paullina.
DNR officials say the species that’s been found there is known for causing ecological damage and can harbor predators and disease if it isn’t addressed.
Given the proximity of the infested lake to the Iowa Great Lakes, DNR officials say aggressive efforts will be taken to treat it.
Left untreated Eurasian Water Milfoil can quickly spread, creating dense matts of vegetation that can choke off lakes and make it nearly impossible to operate boat motors on them.
