Disability Mural Project Now On Display At Pearson Lakes Art Center

November 14, 2025

(Okoboji) 35 years ago, the Americans With Disabilities Act was signed into law and the Pearson Lakes Art Center has found a unique way to celebrate. The Disability Mural Project will be on display from now until February 28th and Holly Zinn Hampel, who is the Education Director at the PLAC, explains what the project encompasses…

“They’ll see just about one hundred canvases on the walls of our Weaver Lobby Gallery, right as you walk into the Pearson Lakes Art center, and you’ll see ten by ten canvases that were dispersed throughout the northwest Iowa community and the variety of media on these canvases anything from drawing, painting, acrylic pours, collage and you’re going to see a lot of colorful pieces. But you’re also, if you really take a look, you’re really going to see a lot of storytelling going on.”

Zinn Hampel says the project isn’t quite complete…

“The exhibit is actually not totally complete, and that’s because we are inviting the public to continue to add to this mural for as long as the exhibit is up through February. So we do have more canvas available and any interested person or people or groups can contact myself here at the art center or give us a call and we can connect you with canvases to keep adding to this. So we have another twenty six already in the works.”

The Disability Mural Project is a collective artwork made up of individual paintings created by people with disabilities, their caregivers and family members, and created during workshops facilitated by artist and Northwest Iowa native Bridget Riversmith. You can contact education@lakesart.org for additional information on this project.
