Dickinson Supervisors Hear Request For Tighter Conflict Of Interest/Transparency Policies

February 11, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Members of the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors are being urged to adopt stricter resolutions on transparency and conflicts of interest. Dan Croft, a board member of the Dickinson County Taxpayer’s Association, presented the request at this (Tues.) morning’s Board of Supervisors meeting, saying they feel the existing policies should be beefed up…

“Maybe there’s some mechanisms for perceived or possible conflicts of interest or possible violations of open meeting laws, a mechanism for the board members to bring those forth which is discussed in the policy. It is required that board members are supposed to report to the chairman of the board any perceived or potential conflicts of interest. So I think one of the resolutions there would be just trying to provide some procedures, possibly involving an auditor, in terms of accumulating information and having it available to report back to the full board of any perceptions of that.”

Supervisor Steve Clark says he feels the current policy is adequate and meets state requirements…

“I think that we’ve always been forthcoming to each other, maybe not in an open meeting, but it’s always been at least individually or with one guy informing two others of it.”

There was also a call at today’s (Tues.) meeting for all county employees to sign off annually on a conflict of interest policy. Croft also requested online video recordings of supervisor meetings be archived for longer periods of time.

The supervisors today (Tues.) took no action on the requests, noting the items were not on the agenda and that they would like the County Attorney to be present for any further discussion or possible action.
